Hartley Reservoir Wildlife Management Area

I went to the Hartley Reservoir Wildlife Management Area located in Rochester Massachusetts for a discovery walk. It was my first time at this area and was surprised by a few sights.

The main surprise was an otter in the distance. And the notable birds were Ring-necked Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, and Buffleheads. Actually, any duck other than a mallard is a welcomed sight since mallards dominate the waters.

The trails are unmarked, wide and well used. There are many side trails that are not maintained and overgrown. I explored one trail and it came to a dead end.

The area is used for a multitude of recreational activities. Use of horses, and dirt bikes were evident. As I walked the trail, the ducks were unusually skittish and as I found out later, I spotted a duck blind and lost duck decoys. The decoys seemed to have gotten lost and were floating at the water’s edge. No wonder the ducks are skittish!

I would like to go back and explore the area once more.
